The sacro monte d'Orta
The Sacro Monte d’Orta rises from a magnificent panoramic position overlooking the town of Orta and the lake of the same name. Inside it, twenty frescoed chapels were built in which 375 life-sized terracotta statues sit that illustrate the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. In addition to the artists, the important contribution from local craftsmen and women is readily noticeable from the numerous examples of their labours creating doors, grilles and grates in wood and wrought iron, demonstrating incredible skill. The complex is a harmonious combination of the artistic heritage represented by the pictorial and sculptural works by skilled artists of the time and the equally interesting natural aspects that characterise the entire area: on the slopes of the hill, the broad-leaved woods prevail whilst in the area of the monument itself, vegetation has always been maintained as a historic garden. Within the complex, therefore, a singular relationship has been created between nature, the spectacle which is the lake, the greenery and the chapels that still distinguish the Sacro Monte.
